The Effects of Patient Communication Skills Training on Compliance

I became interested in studying the effects of patient communication skills training during a study of physician-patient communication I conducted with a graduate student about 5 years ago. As we observed physician-patient dyads on the television screen during videotaping, we began to see the ways both physicians and patients contributed to the effectiveness of medical interviews. It became clear that some patients were much better than others at communicating their concerns to physicians. We also began to notice how patients' communication contributed to time management problems and other difficulties, especially when interacting with residents. We wondered to what extent researchers had developed communication skills training programs for patients. A literature review indicated that little attention had been given to training patients in communication skills, so we developed a procedure for doing so and tested it in a pilot study. I found working with patients so rewarding and interesting that I focused on developing and testing various ways of instructing patients in communication skills.
