The comments by Kriebel, Horowitz, and Smith point to several important issues regarding workload and satisfaction with workload in the retention of rural primary care physicians. First, Kriebel suggested that our study1 was incomplete because it focused on one group of physicians and that comparisons between rural primary care physicians and other physicians (eg, nonrural non—primary care physicians) are critical to understanding the retention process.
