The rapid growth in knowledge regarding the care of persons infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) presents multiple challenges to physicians. One of these challenges is staying upto-date with all the new information. Keeping up-to-date challenges textbook editors as well. Virtually all the information on HIV and the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) has the risk of being outdated between the time of its writing and the time of publication. The fourth edition of The Medical Management of AIDS demonstrates that Sande and Volberding are up to the challenge. Updated roughly every 2 years since 1988, the editors have worked hard to keep the content current. The text is logically divided into basic science and clinical areas. Most clinical problems are addressed in two ways: from an organ system standpoint and via discussion of specific infections and conditions.
