This 367-page volume on headache treatment deals with the subject in an appropriate, comprehensive fashion for primary care physicians. Each of the 19 chapters is written by a headache expert and, although there is the inevitable variation in style and some overlap in content because of multiple contributors, the editors, Cady and Fox, are to be congratulated for consistently keeping the needs of their targeted readership in mind. They have maintained a realistic and practical approach throughout.

The book is divided into five sections, "What Is Migraine?" "Clinical Diagnosis and Treatment," "Other Headache Disorders," "Behavioral Aspects," and "Consultation and Future Directions."

The section "What Is Migraine" is wide ranging. It deals with the history of migraine, its epidemiology, and social impact, and a chapter by Couch simplifies some of the complexities but concludes that a "final unifying mechanism" for the condition has not yet been found.
