A number of short-course pharmacotherapy regimens are now available for the treatment of vaginal candidiasis that can improve patient compliance (Table). In 85% to 90% of cases, Candida albicans is the causative organism.1 Single-dose, orally administered fluconazole (150-mg tablet) has recently been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for treatment of vaginal candidiasis. Adequate controlled studies have shown single-dose fluconazole to be as effective as other common treatments for vaginal candidiasis.2 Oral administration of fluconazole in a single dose can cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. . . .
