The Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale (NBAS) has been used for the last 20 years to explore the capacity of the neonate to interact with the environment. It is a standardized research tool with rigorous administration guidelines. It is also an examination schema accessible to the primary care clinician who wants a technique to engage in meaningful and therapeutic interaction with the neonates and their families. This manual combines the information needed to perform the examination to the specifications of research protocols with the descriptive narrative, case scenarios, and philosophical basis necessary to use the scale in the office, postpartum ward, or neonatal intensive care unit. By addressing both aspects of the scale, this volume effectively solidifies the continuum of applications, from research to clinical newborn primary care.
