Abstract

Using material from inquiries to ten national unions and a review of the literature describing specific activities and experiences, this article analyzes what is currently known about librarians in labor unions. Areas explored are legal considerations, scope of bargaining unit, member satisfaction, contract administration, and prospects for developing a national librarians' union. The article concludes that the union movement among librarians has been fragmented and librarians are generally in a weak bargaining position even when represented by a union.
