Abstract

Grievance arbitration cases were examined in Iowa public schools during the years 1982 - 1986. Data collected were compared to that collected previously from 1976 - 1981. The purpose of the collection and the comparison was to examine the grievance arbitration process over the lifetime of Iowa's collective bargaining law, to note the nature and quantity of issues grieved, the positions utilized by the two parties and by arbitrators, and the success rate for the parties of awards rendered. The researcher used the data to discuss several conclusions important to the parties (management particularly) in future grievance situations. At the same time, the study provided a summary of the grievance arbitration process in the first 11 years of its existence in Iowa public schools.
