JUDGMENT ANALYSIS OF POTENTIAL FOR EMPLOYMENT TERMINATION AS PERCEIVED BY TEACHERS

Abstract

A random sample of 504 elementary, middle/junior high, and high school teachers was selected from twenty-one school districts in a southern state. Teachers were sent an instrument designed to assess: 1) their overall perception associated with potential for employment termination, and 2) their perception associated with employment termination according to thirteen given situations. Judgment analysis was used to analyze 306 questionnaires returned by the selected elementary, middle/junior high, and high school teachers. There were significant differences in profiles of the three groups regarding the extent to which the threat of termination for specific situations related to an overall potential for termination. Elementary teachers perceived situations associated with teaching qualifications and absenteeism as being primary contributors to the overall threat of termination. Secondary and middle/junior high teachers had different profiles of loadings that pertained to teaching enthusiasm and failure to meet certification. Profiles of the teacher groups were discussed.
