Abstract

Although a number of studies have estimated the impact of faculty unions on the salaries of college professors, none has done so exclusively for faculty at public junior colleges. This study attempts to fill this gap in the literature by using data from the recently released National Study of Post-Secondary Faculty conducted by the U.S. Department of Education. The principal finding of this article is that collective bargaining leads to an 8 percent increase in the salaries of junior college faculty. This is considerably higher than the union impact at comprehensive and doctoral/research institutions.
