Introduction

As the author of a flora that was used by generations of amateur and professional botanists and, later in his career, of numerous studies on the taxonomy of genus Rosa, François Crépin has a place among the leading botanists in Belgium in the nineteenth century. See for more information about his life and career, among others, Errera & Durand (1906), Lebrun (1968), Diagre-Vanderpelen (2011) and Hoste & Diagre-Vanderpelen (2018).1

Taking as a starting point the list of Crépin’s publications compiled by Errera & Durand (1906) shortly after his death, we here publish a corrected and extended bibliography. The list in Errera & Durand contains quite a few careless mistakes (such as titles that are not quoted correctly) and typographical errors, which may make it difficult to retrieve some of Crépin’s publications from libraries or the Internet. A number of publications are, furthermore, altogether missing from their list, but were retrieved during the preparation of our list by screening several different bibliographical sources. Very helpful among these was the bibliography on roses published by K.L. Stock (1984).2

Having access to the rich library collections at Botanic Garden Meise proved invaluable for the compilation of an improved bibliography. Personal copies of books that contain contributions by Crépin and offprints or journal cuttings of his papers were later incorporated into the library of the institution – then named Jardin botanique de l’Etat – of which he was the director between 1876 and 1901. These personal copies of offprints and books frequently contain annotations by Crépin and are therefore a valuable yet vulnerable part of the heritage kept at the Botanic Garden library: the quality of the paper of these late 19th-century books and booklets is often very poor.

The term ‘publication’ has here been used rather loosely. This certainly applies to Crépin’s contributions to the Bulletin(s) de la Société royale de Botanique de Belgique. [The title page of volumes 1 through 5 reads Bulletins…, whereas from volume 6 it reads Bulletin…] As secrétaire des publications Crépin was, from 1867 until 1874, responsible for the publication of the Bulletin of the Botanical Society and for the reviews of received publications. From 1875, after his election as secrétaire général, Crépin wrote numerous unsigned short texts and notices for the Bulletin. His bibliographical notes in the Bulletin too are often not signed and vary from little more than brief announcements to more or less elaborate papers (see note under # 36). For the years between 1866 and 1874 we have assumed that all the unsigned bibliographical notes or book reviews were written by Crépin; in the list of publications we have included these unsigned reviews as anonymous contributions. All the bibliographical contributions for the Bulletin Crépin wrote throughout his career, however small, have been included in the list. Among his biographical – often necrological – contributions, those that are mere announcements of death, without any further information about the deceased, are not listed. The short notices in the Bulletin of the death of famous botanists or members of the Société are usually not signed, but the context shows they were written by Crépin. As part of his activities as secretary of the Société, Crépin wrote numerous short unsigned communications and announcements for the Bulletin; if their content lies outside the spheres of bibliography or biography, they have not been considered for inclusion in the list. Nor have we searched for printed documents resulting from Crépin’s administrative tasks as director of the Botanic Garden, such as year reports published in the Moniteur belge.

For each publication, including periodicals (with the exception of the Bulletin de la Société royale de Botanique de Belgique), we added location and publisher copied from the title page. Sometimes, however, this information was not given in the original publication (e.g. name of the publisher). Very often the covers of individual fascicules lack from the bound volumes in library collections. It is, furthermore, not uncommon to find online digitalized volumes of an old periodical with a pdf of each single paper, but without scans of the covers and/or title pages of the entire volumes. This hampers the elaboration of a precise and complete bibliographical description.

Frequently the indication of the ‘publisher’ on the cover is rather confusing. The name on the cover may be linked with quite different steps in the process of book production and distribution, including activities such as printing, publishing, and bookselling. In the references, no effort has been made to draw distinctions between these activities. As for the Bulletin of the Société: the title page of the volumes 1–5 mentions ‘Bruxelles, M. Hayez’, whereas from volume 6 (henceforth printed in Ghent) it mentions ‘Bruxelles, au Siège de la Société, Jardin botanique/Jardin botanique de l’État’. This information is not repeated in the references in the list.

As for the use of uppercase in the titles of periodicals, we have tried to follow the original, although this may require interpretation when complete words are capitalized. We have also kept close to the original terms when using ‘tome’ (‘t.’), volume, n° or N°, year(s) (instead of volume in a series), etc. as this may help disentangle complicated references. The use of ‘[sic]’ has been restricted to the minimum to indicate typographical errors.

Authorship: pseudonyms and ‘anonymous’ publications

Sometimes, for reasons that can only be guessed at, Crépin used a pseudonym. Fortunately, these publications, or at least some of them, were known and listed by Errera & Durand (1906). On occasion one understands or can infer that Crépin had a good reason for not signing an article with his real name. The use of a pseudonym did not, however, always make his authorship a well-kept little secret; see, for instance, # 65 and # 374.

Whether a publication was ‘anonymous’ or not, could depend on contextual knowledge on the part of the reader. Although members of the Société royale de Botanique de Belgique knew quite well that Crépin – as secrétaire des publications or, later, as secrétaire général – was the author of numerous unsigned short notes or book reviews in the Bulletin, it certainly made sense to add the author’s name on offprints of these publications. Short notes in the Bulletin preceded by the words ‘Le secrétaire’ etc. have here been considered anonymous.

In 1865 François Crépin decided to change the orthography of his name from ‘Crepin’ to ‘Crépin’ (Errera & Durand 1906: endnote 1); this explains the use of the former name variant in the references that predate 1865.

Offprints

If available, offprints from the rich collection kept in the library of Botanic Garden Meise were compared with the original publications. It did not come as a surprise that lay-out and pagination very often differed from the original, as this was a widespread practice in these days. However, offprints sometimes also received a title that strongly differed from the one in the original publication or had their text slightly edited. The title page of an offprint often gave some extra information on the author’s career and scientific curriculum as compared with the original publication.

In some cases, only knowledge of the offprints of Crépin’s papers permits a correct identification of the original source of a reference to his work. Given the differences between originals and offprints, it is important to emphasize that all the data in the list below (e.g. page numbers) are based on the ‘original publications’, a phrase that here also includes digitalized versions from the fast expanding virtual mega-library of old publications on the Internet, such as Biodiversity Heritage Library, where many of the papers listed below can be accessed. When an offprint differs from the original, we added an additional comment wherever we think this can be helpful for researchers.

Quite a few ‘offprints’ of Crépin’s publications in the collection of Botanic Garden Meise are nicely finished booklets with an added jacket printed on paper of a different colour. The difference between an offprint sensu stricto (primarily used for exchange in the author’s research network of scientists and naturalists) and a booklet as an offshoot of a publication in a journal (intended for distribution or sale among a wider audience) is often hard to determine. See, for instance, # 17 and # 319.

In the publications of rhodologists, details in references to Crépin’s papers, such as page references or titles, frequently betray they were taken from offprints rather than from the original journal. This testifies to the significance of offprints for the circulation of his research results and underlines the importance of keeping a well-organized and as comprehensive collection of offprints as possible.

Chronology

In the list, the publications are arranged chronologically. This is always based on the year of publication as indicated on the title page of the volume, not on the publication date of the fascicule, although the publication of the latter may be given in a note. It should be kept in mind that the real publication date of books (or parts thereof) or fascicules of journals may differ significantly from the indication on the cover. Trying to establish the real year or date of publication often requires careful interpretation of information from a variety of archival sources. The conclusions of such research are often not known by people in search of an old publication – and may altogether be of little importance to them. Therefore, while of great value for historical research, the use of real publication dates is not a primary necessity in a bibliography that is primarily intended as a working tool for people trying to track down the original text of a paper.

Based on different sources, including the archives of the Société royale de Botanique de Belgique, Tournay (1962) compiled as complete as possible a table with indication of the precise publication dates of the fascicules of the Bulletin of the Botanical Society.3 If this information differs from or adds to the year mentioned on the cover or title page of the Bulletin, we have added this between square brackets.

We have not made a sustained effort to determine the precise publication date of all the other publications in the way Tournay did for the Bulletin. If, however, relevant information on the discrepancy between the date on the title page and the real date of publication is available, this is given in a note. If a note proposes an alternative for the printed information on a cover, this information has been underlined.

Category labels

At the beginning of each record in the list below an abbreviation indicates the category to which the publication belongs. In all, eight categories have been defined. The allocation of a publication to a category is sometimes debatable. To avoid complications, each publication received no more than a single category label.

Within each year, the publications are grouped by category, and these are always placed in the same order. The order of the first three categories reflects the evolution of Crépin’s scientific research career over a period that spanned almost five decades, starting with floristics and phytogeography of the flora of Belgium and Western Europe, continuing with a period of paleobotanical research, and finally focusing almost exclusively on the preparation of a world monograph of genus Rosa which unfortunately remained unfinished.

The eight categories and their abbreviations are as follows:

  • FLOR – Floristics and biogeography of Belgium and surrounding countries (including excursion reports).
  • PALEO – Paleobotany.
  • ROSA – Rhodology (study of the genus Rosa), including publications on species from Belgium and surrounding countries.
  • VIEWS – General reflections on nomenclature, the ‘species problem’, etc.
  • BIBLIO – Bibliographical notes and book reviews.
  • BIO – Biography.
  • EDU – Education and popularization.
  • MISC – Miscellaneous publications.

Future updates

We are aware that the list still contains errors and that so far a number of publications have escaped our attention, for instance articles about roses or other botanical topics in horticultural journals. Another example are treatments of genus Rosa that Crépin wrote for several different regional or national floras; such publications, sometimes with only a rather inconspicuous reference to the author, are easily overlooked. We welcome corrections and additions to the list of publications given below and intend to publish future updates on the website of Botanic Garden Meise.

Note on archival sources for a biography of François Crépin

Archival records relating to the private life of Crépin or his ideas and activities outside the realm of botany (including his administrative tasks as head of the State Botanic Garden) are rather few and somewhat scattered. See e.g. ABG (Archive Botanic Garden) at Botanic Garden Meise for some letters to and from relatives.

As for his activities as a botanist, the library and archives at Botanic Garden Meise are essential:

  • ABG 114–149 contains thousands of incoming letters from his large network, covering the period from the 1850s until the end of his life. Numerous letters relate to his activities in de Société royale de Botanique de Belgique. References to sources in ABG related to Crépin are given in D. Diagre-Vanderpelen, Le Jardin botanique de Bruxelles (1826–1912). Miroir d’une jeune nation (doctoral thesis ULB, 2006).
  • The library code numbers HIS 682, HIS 1950–1952, ROS 25–29 and PAL 74 refer to 10 volumes of offprints of Crépin’s publications; they sometimes contain handwritten notes by the author.
  • In the library, the section ROS (Rosaceae) contains numerous books annotated by Crépin. ROS 30–46 are a collection of manuscripts, including copied excerpts (sometimes with drawings) from rhodological publications.

In the Herbarium of roses, also at Botanic Garden Meise, handwritten notes by Crépin often accompany the sheets. Herbarium collections with notes added by Crépin can be found in numerous herbaria all over de world.

Continuing efforts to locate Crépin’s outgoing correspondence in the papers of recipients have so far not been very successful. Some letters have been located in, e.g., Namur (Facultés Universitaires Notre-Dame de la Paix, Bibliothèque universitaire Moretus Plantin, letters to A. Bellynck, RMNB061) and Angers (Arboretum du Muséum des Sciences naturelles: Archives A. Boreau, correspondances). Unfortunately, no letters to key figures such as H. Christ, B. Dumortier or P.E. Parmentier have so far been tracked down.

1858

[Note on 1858. – In Notes sur quelques plantes rares… (see # 3), Crépin mentions the publication of ‘des spécimens secs’ of Rosa coronata at the end of 1858. This refers to Crépin’s contribution to a large project of published herbarium specimens (exsiccatae) by Philipp Wirtgen (1806–1870), Herbarium plantae criticae. Normally, exsiccatae are not included in lists of publications and the specimens are usually not preserved in the original context, but instead divided and inserted in the receiving institution’s herbarium collections. This makes hunting down such contributions labour-intensive. No effort has been made to trace Crépin’s activities in this area and include them in our bibliography (but see # 469).]

It went through 5 editions and numerous reprints, the last one printed in the 1920s (or perhaps the early 1930s?). For the later editions, see # 62, # 239, # 318 and # 340.

  2. – Nearly a century after its publication, the American botanist Lloyd H. Shinners was still charmed by this flora. He translated parts of the introduction (pages VII, XI–XXIII and XXV–XXVI) in English for The Asa Gray Bulletin (N.S. vol. 3, Spring 1955: 65–76). This in turn was reprinted in Field & Laboratory (vol. XXV, No. 2–3, April–July 1957: 65–78). In the Manuel, which he described as ‘technically respectable and adequate, in contrast with the flimsy, trivial wild flower guides which serve the American public of today,’ Shinners recognized ‘the enthusiasm and enjoyment that botany once occasioned.’

Note: 1. – The offprint in the library of Botanic Garden Meise is a booklet titled L’Ardenne which is also dated 1863 (but refers to the 1862 volume of the Bulletin de la Fédération…). The page layout is the same as in the Bulletin, the only changes being a new pagination, an added title page and, at the end, an added ‘Table des familles’. Whereas the Bulletin has on the title page the indication ‘Imprimerie et Lithographie de C. Annoot-Braeckman’ (in Ghent), the title page of the offprint identifies the publisher as ‘Librairie de Gustave Mayolez’ in Brussels.

  2. – A note on p. 335 refers to ‘un ouvrage général sur la flore de Belgique, qui doit paraître l’année prochaine’. This is almost certainly Crépin’s Revue de la Flore de Belgique, a book that was never published (see above, note on 1862).

Note: 1. – Apparently this is a translation – whether with changes in the text or not, we do not know – of a manuscript that was first submitted for publication in Bulletins de l’Académie royale des Sciences, des Lettres et des Beaux-Arts de Belgique. The manuscript, Considérations sur l’espèce, à propos d’un récent ouvrage de M. Jordan, was, however, not accepted; see Bulletins… 2e série, t. 18 (1864): 375–379. The time span between its rejection (session of the Académie royale of Dec. 3, 1864) and its publication in The Naturalist is remarkably short.

Note: 1. – In Errera & Durand (1906), the above title and La synonymie au Congrès de botanique de Paris refer to the same publication. At the end, Crépin’s paper is signed ‘Rochefort, 19 décembre 1867.’ The cover of fascicule 11–12 of Annales… is dated 1867.

  2. – In this paper, Crépin vehemently attacks the text of article 48 of the Lois de la Nomenclature botanique as voted and accepted by the botanical congress in Paris, August 16–23, 1867. The author extensively quotes from the recently published second edition of Lois de la Nomenclature botanique (in which the introduction is dated October 15, 1867), but mentions that he has not yet seen the proceedings of the congress, although, according to the title page, these were published in November 1867.   Note: Published in 2 parts under the heading ‘Bibliographie’, this publication is more than merely a book review, for it also includes results of research by the reviewer. This sort of hybrid between a review and a research paper is perfectly in line with a wish expressed anonymously by Crépin two years earlier, soon after the founding of the Société royale de Botanique de Belgique: ‘Il est à désirer, qu’imitant ce qu’on fait dans plusieurs recueils étrangers, on donne dans ces bulletins [de la Société] une analyse substantielle des principaux articles paraissant mensuellement dans les journaux scientifiques.’ (Quote from # 9: 326).

[42] – FLOR – FC (1865), La flore belge étudiée par fragments, ou notes sur les plantes rares et critiques de la Belgique. Première série. Comprenant les fascicules I–V. 30 + 75 + 40 + 63 + 274/278 [without/with printed index] p. + 6 plates. Bruxelles, G. Mayolez.

Note: 1. – See also # 3, # 8, # 18, # 19, # 60 and # 61. This book unites, in a single volume, 5 separate fascicules (the fifth in its turn consisting of two parts) that were originally published by the Académie royale de Belgique. The library of Botanic Garden Meise has three variants of this publication. Only the first variant has a common title page for the entire volume; the title page in variants 2 and 3 only covers the contents of the first fascicule.

  • Variant 1, on which the description above has been based, has the following text on the title page: ‘La Flore belge étudiée par fragments, ou notes sur les plantes rares et critiques de la Belgique, par François Crépin, Professeur de botanique. Première série. Comprenant les fascicules I–V.
Premier fascicule. – Bruxelles, M. Hayez, Imprimeur de l’Académie royale de Belgique. 1859.’

Some further details on the three variants are given in the table below.

Variant 1 Variant 2 Variant 3

Common title page for the 5 fascicules Present (G. Mayolez, 1859–1865). Lacking. (Text of the half title: ‘Notes sur quelques plantes rares ou critiques de la Belgique’).
Fascicule 1 (see # 3) Title page lacking. Text: new typesetting (1865). Title page present. Publisher: G. Mayolez. Text: new typesetting (1865). Title page present. Publisher: M. Hayez. Text: original typesetting (1859)
Fascicules 2, 3, and 4 (see # 8, #18, and # 19) Title page identical in the 3 variants. Publisher: G. Mayolez (1862/1863/1864).
Fascicule 5 (including a separate study on genus Glyceria) (see # 60 and # 61) Added common title page for fasc. A similar title page lacks from the publication in the Mémoires of the Académie royale.
Additional separate title pages for fasc. 5 and the additions; no date or publisher mentioned. No separate title pages for fasc. 5 and the additions.
Printed index Present (pages 275–278). Not included; a handwritten index has been added later.

Neither the reason why several variants of this publication exist nor how they should be arranged chronologically are obvious. The title La flore belge étudiée par fragments… appears not to have been the ‘definitive’ title for the book: publicity on the cover of Eerste begrippen van plantenkunde (see # 393), published in 1888 by G. Mayolez, refers to the book as Notes sur quelques plantes rares…

Confusing references to this collection of reprints should be avoided; this is easily done by referring to the original publications in the Bulletins and Mémoires of the Académie royale des Sciences, des Lettres et des Beaux-Arts de Belgique.

  2. – Notwithstanding the indication ‘Première série’ on the title page, no further fascicules or volumes were ever published.

As a matter of fact, the volume opens with a report on the inauguration, in 1879, of a monument for the deceased horticulturist in Gentbrugge. The indication ‘1880’ on the title page of the volume is misleading. Numerous contributions were submitted in 1882 and 1883 and deal with post 1880 events.   Note: 1. – For the first edition, see # 4.

  2. – The publication history of the fifth edition of the Manuel is rather complex, with a long series of editorially unaltered reprints. A large initial print run apparently was finished and bound over a period that spanned many years, resulting in book covers that bear a range of ‘publication’ years. The Manuel was later taken over by the printing and publishing business Desoer in Liège. Some of the often poorly dated reprints were misleadingly labeled 9th or 10th edition. See for an overview Dumortiera 102 (2013): 49–53.

  3. – In 1934, Editions Desoer (Liège), who was also the publisher of the last reprints of Crépin’s Manuel, published Jules Goffart’s Nouveau Manuel de la Flore de Belgique et des Régions limitrophes. This flora included the following lines on the title page: ‘Ancien Manuel de la Flore de Belgique par François Crépin remanié, mis à jour et étendu au Nord de la France, au G.-D. de Luxembourg, aux provinces rhénanes et au Sud de la Hollande.’ In reality, the Nouveau Manuel was a completely new flora and the reference to Crépin’s Manuel was not applauded by all Belgian botanists, some seeing it as an act of disrespectful intellectual appropriation of Crépin’s legacy; see Dumortiera 39 (1987): 1–3.

Note: The leaflets # 373 and # 374, both printed by F. Hayez, were written following the announcement of the publication of a new flora composed by two French botanists. Two separate editions of this flora, one by a French publisher (Nouvelle Flore du Nord de la France et de la Belgique, Paris, Librairie classique et administrative, sine dato [1887]) and one by a Belgian publisher (Nouvelle Flore de la Belgique et du Nord de la France, Bruxelles, J. Lebègue et Cie, sine dato [1887]), were for sale in the spring of 1887. The two leaflets were printed in 1887, although Errera & Durand (1906) mentions 1888. See also below, # 374, and Natura Mosana, nouvelle série, n° 70 (2): 1–14 (2017).

[374] – MISC – Anon. [Signed ‘Botanicus’] (sine dato), Deux botanistes chinois partisans du libre-échange. 4 p. Bruxelles, F. Hayez.

Note: This leaflet was printed in May or June 1887. Like # 373, it arose from the announcement of the publication of a new flora destined for the Belgian market. That Crépin was the author of this leaflet apparently was not a big secret. His name was mentioned in passing in a short notice in the journal La Flore illustrée. Revue hebdomadaire des Amateurs de Botanique et d’Horticulture (4e année, No 30, Dimanche 19 Juin [1887]: 478) about a flora that had been published recently by G. Bonnier and G. de Layens: ‘Ces deux Chinois, comme les appelle M. Crépin, ont écrit une Flore du Nord de la France,…’ One week later, the complete text of Crépin’s leaflet was reprinted in the same journal (p. 484–487). As in the original leaflet, it was signed ‘Botanicus’. See on this affair Natura Mosana, nouvelle série, n° 70 (2): 1–14 (2017).

Maretheux. Page 3 indicates that the catalogue is dated December 15, 1899. The library of Botanic Garden Meise has a copy of this booklet with a letter from J. Gravereaux (1844–1916), owner of the rose collection, attached to it. In this letter dated 30.12.1899 Gravereaux thanks the Belgian rhodologue for ‘votre si obligeant concours’ in the production of the catalogue, furthermore expressing the hope ‘que vous n’y trouverez que peu d’erreurs’. This clearly suggests that the text was compiled by Gravereaux or one of his collaborators at the Roseraie, based on Crépin’s publications and presumably also on information from correspondence.]
