International Normalized Ratio

The New Standard for Monitoring Oral Anticoagulation

Julienne K. Kirk, PharmD; K. Patricia McGann, MD, MSPH

Arch Fam Med. 1994;3(1):71-74.

Abstract

Appropriate monitoring of oral anticoagulation therapy is important in guiding therapeutic decisions regarding warafrin dosing. Although the prothrombin time has been the usual measurement used to follow oral anticoagulation, the international normalized ratio is the new standard. This report will review the current role of the international normalized ratio.
