A Therapeutic Program for Bereaved Children

Linda W. Peterson, PhD; Monica J. Nitsch, RPh; Pam Higgins

Arch Fam Med. 1994;3(1):76-82.

Abstract

Identifying and assisting bereaved children can reduce their risk for future psychopathology. This report provides recommendations for the family physician based on an intervention progrem with a group of bereaved children referred by behavioral specialists and physicians associated with a major medical center. Objectives for bereaved children are outlined, and the intake questionnaire, behavioral checklists, family drawing interpretation, anger management tools, books, and movies are suggested. Case studies illustrate the effectiveness of intervention and demonstrate the variability of children's responses.
