The author's goal is to provide "a current guide to choosing and interpreting laboratory tests." The topics in this book include not only the expected determinations for blood, urine, and synovial fluid but also tests such as the Brief Michigan Alcohol Screening Test, the CAGE questions about alcohol-related problems, and lung scans. There is some discussion of screening tests, but most of the book involves the diagnosis and management of disease.

The book's contents cover an assortment of problems that include both diagnoses (eg, acute myocardial infarction, pulmonary embolism, and diabetes mellitus) and clinical signs (eg, glycosuria, ascites, and hyperkalemia). This second edition differs from the first in that it includes additional— and current—problems such as chronic fatigue syndrome and Lyme disease.
