SCRAPING ITSELF from my life's transactions, the pain has pressed acquaintance, dropping its fingers upon my shoulder, crossing my threshold, picking its spot, descending to my bony basement.
It is unobtrusive, mostly, keeps out of bedroom and parlor. Yet I still sense it out there, perched in wait on my hot back stoop. So when company comes I slip it a drug for dinner, and for a time there's not a peek from it. Then I start to dare, scarcely to hope, it's at last skulked out by my back door, seeking more congenial rooms. But over the dawn birdcall I wake to its dull knock on the dark door and, should I dare disregard it, flinch to the insistent thrump of knuckles on my ceiling, clunk upon my skull. Then I know to lay its place again for breakfast.
