Among every group of physicians, there is always one who is called on by colleagues to examine a patient with an interesting physical finding and to offer a second opinion. This physician usually does not have the most years of postgraduate training or additional degrees but instead has been made wise by many years in clinical practice. In the art of physical diagnosis, there seems to be no substitute for experience. Who among us can forget how hard it was to hear the click or the regurgitant murmur in a patient with a mitral valve prolapse or to confidently diagnose otitis media before first being shown the physical findings by a mentor?
