It is widely acknowledged that AIDS [acquired immunodeficiency syndrome] must increasingly become a disease managed by primary care practitioners... the special skills of primary care physicians are often valuable... with a disease that can affect every organ system... with a vast array of psychosocial issues, and that increasingly may be controlled through early intervention and long-term continuity of care.
