Although inevitably doomed to archaism like other medical texts, this pocket-sized handbook contains the most contemporary information about sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). This handbook is an abbreviated, updated, miniature version of the second edition of the classic textbook, Sexually Transmitted Diseases, 1990, by King K. Holmes, Per-Anders Mårdh, P. Frederick Sparling, and Paul J. Wiesner. Condensation of the classic text has sacrificed chapters on the history and behavioral aspects of STDs, diagnostic testing for STDs, control of STDs, and pharmacologic therapies for STDs without adversely affecting the clinical focus. Most importantly, the recommended 1993 Sexually Transmitted Diseases Treatment Guidelines (Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. 1993;42:1-102) are clearly represented in the text.
While modern in scope, Practical details and consistency of format were notable weaknesses. For example, office-based DNA probe testing for vaginitis and podophyllotoxin therapy for condyloma acuminatum were not included in the text. A consistent, clinically focused format for
