Kriebel is right to point out that it has never been shown that attrition (failed retention) among rural physicians is greater than that among urban physicians. Nevertheless, attrition remains a particular problem for many rural communities, where the failure to retain a physician can trigger a long and, at times, fruitless search for a replacement. Even if attrition among rural and urban physicians proves to be comparable, its consequences are greater for those in rural areas.
