Nothing pleased me more than receiving the first edition of Parrillo and Bone's book on critical care medicine to review for the ARCHIVES. I had received some mailers on it and had lusted for this text. In general, I have not been disappointed.
The text is a tome, clearly not meant to be carried around on rounds. It has 1667 pages. The table of contents is divided into 10 major sections, most of which are internal medicine based. The first 19 chapters fall under the heading "Critical Care Procedures" and total 290 pages. I particularly enjoyed the historical reviews, but they are only present for the chapters on the chest tube, thoracostomy, tracheostomy, mechanical ventilations, and gastrointestinal tract endoscopy procedure. The usual procedures you might expect are listed and dealt with in detail, with a couple of pleasant surprises, such as tracheostomy, gastrointestinal endoscopy, and ultrasonography of the abdomen and
