WHY DO we grow sick or well? Why do we recover, quickly or slowly, wholly or partly, or not at all?

On rounds this morning one form of answer comes, although it is secretly encoded in letters of crayon-red. Posted to the patient's door is a sheet of paper on which are written, in a child's careful hand, the following lines:

    Daniel's FEES
  • • If woken up from sleeping (for any reason): $5.00
  • • Listening to heart, lungs, or stomach: $1.00
  • • Checking fingers, toes, or any other part of body: 50 cents
  • • Listening to heart, lungs, or stomach at 7:00 AM: $2.50
  • • Taking blood: $2.00
  • • Putting a new PIC line in: $10.00
