Abstract

Militant attitudes in a sample of Chicago area teachers are associated with gender (male), level of education, number of children in a teacher's family, and religious affiliation. This study's results support previous research on the significant demographic variables. Aside from these demographic characteristics, union/strike - slowdown factors also are associated with militant attitude. The strong association between union representation and the organized actions of teachers with militancy suggests that public school district decision makers may be wise to avoid that first strike or slowdown if they desire to moderate teacher militant attitudes.
