Abstract

Comparable worth is an extremely controversial topic in the United States; amid dire predictions about its effects, several states have adopted comparable worth requirements for their public sector employees. The Province of Quebec has had a comparable worth program covering both public and private sector employees since 1975; the Quebec experience with comparable worth is relevant to the future of comparable worth in the United States. This article describes and analyzes the Quebec comparable worth program, and draws some conclusions applicable to comparable worth in the United States.
