Abstract

Based on a sample of 601 published grievance arbitration awards, this study revealed that commonly identified arbitrator and case characteristics, such as gender of the arbitrator and gender of the grievant, did not make a statistically significant difference with regard to the ultimate outcome, or award. The only exception was the issue on the merits, with discipline/discharge cases marked by a significantly higher proportion of compromise awards and with contract interpretation cases marked by a significantly higher proportion of grievances upheld.
