e-Learning: principles and tools

Abstract

Considerable attention is being given both nationally and within individual institutions to reasons for, and ways in which, information technology can be used. Vast resources continue to be invested in technology-enhanced learning and instruction. The underlying implicit faith is that technology will make education better. While one ought to be sceptical about dramatic improvements, one cannot ignore what is happening due to the advent of the Internet. This paper sets the educational context and provides an introduction to e-learning and its various communication tools as well as some of their useful applications. Finally, it presents the reader with empirical evidence from the author's research relevant to the use of the Web as a source of information and its correlation with various factors that are connected to learning.
