Abstract

The levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) is a highly effective method of pregnancy prevention used by women throughout the world. Until recently, intrauterine contraception has been underutilized by US women particularly adolescents.

This is primarily because of persistent misconceptions and myths held by clinicians and patients surrounding the safety and efficacy of these devices. This article presents the latest research regarding the acceptability, safety, and efficacy of the LNG-IUS.
