Plasticity of the dual glutamatergic-GABAergic phenotype of the granule cells. During development, the granule cells and their terminals express the machinery for the synthesis and release of glutamate
and GABA. Upon its completion, at the end of the third postnatal week, the GABAergic phenotype is decreased and the granule
cells exclusively express a glutamatergic phenotype. Seizures and sustained enhancement of excitability transiently increase
