Proposed mechanism for the metastasis of breast cancer cells. Cells leaving a localized tumor undergo epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) (indicated by the arrow) and acquire the characteristics of cancer stem cells thereby obtaining the ability to establish distant metastases, for example lung metastases.
