Abstract:

The Fulbright program is an international exchange program for educators that is sponsored by the Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs of the United States Department of State and is administered by the Council for the International Exchange of Scholars in over 150 countries. This paper describes the process of acquiring a lecturing grant through the Fulbright Traditional Scholar program, the selection of a host institution, and the subsequent grant opportunities and activities in India in the area of clinical pharmacy. The primary activities of the grant period included lecturing, thesis guidance, patient counseling, case presentations, visits to neighboring institutions, and presentations at national pharmacy meetings. The grant reporting requirements include an interim and final report to be filed through the Council for the International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) office and website. A Fulbright grant is an unusual and satisfying method to gain experience in grant writing and international education. The experience also provides a means to further establish collaborative projects with the host institution, through Fulbright Alumni Initiative Award Programs.
