This virulent strain (MLST genotype GT62, group A3b) was isolated in 1981 from a dead 14-month-old female Beefmaster heifer in Sarita, Texas. The "Ames" misnomer arose in 1981 when cultures were shipped from Texas A&M University to the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases using an old address label from Ames, Iowa. This strain is now referred to as "Ames Ancestor" in order to distinguish it from its descendant.
