The pathovar X. cynarae pv. cynarae may be distinguished based on host specificity to artichoke. Phenotypically, X. cynarae pv. cynarae can be differentiated by its glycerol utilization and insensitivity to guanidine hydrochloride and aztreonam. The X. cynarae type strain, CFBP 4188T, also represents the X. cynarae pv. cynarae pathotype strain.
