The species Rhodobacter massiliensis was originally described by Greub and Raoult 2003. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 111 in 2006. In 2007, Helsel et al. established Rhodobacter massiliensis as the basonym of
Haematobacter massiliensis (Greub and Raoult 2006) Helsel et al. 2007 emend. Hördt et al. 2020
