The species Actinobacillus equuli was originally described by Haupt 1934. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 2002, Christensen et al. reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form (van Straaten 1918) Christensen et al. 2002 .
