The species Bacteroides ruminicola was originally described by Bryant et al. 1958. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 1980, Skerman et al. reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form Bryant et al. 1958 (Approved Lists 1980) . In 1990, Shah and Collins established as the basonym of (Bryant et al. 1958) Shah and Collins 1990 emend. García-López et al. 2019 .
