The species Campylobacter jejuni was originally described by Véron and Chatelain 1973. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 1988, Steele and Owen reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form (Jones et al. 1931) Véron and Chatelain 1973 (Approved Lists 1980) .
