Nomenclatural History
The species Lewinella persicus was originally described and validly published by Sly et al. 1998. Khan et al. published an emended description of this species in 2007. A subsequent emendation was proposed by Hahnke et al. in 2016. Sly et al. formed this name in 1998 by placing the species Lewin 1970 (Approved Lists 1980) into the genus Sly et al. 1998 emend. Khan et al. 2007.

The validly published new combination of Herpetosiphon persicus is Lewinella persica (Lewin 1970) Sly et al. 1998, where the specific epithet "persica" agrees in gender with the generic epithet "Lewinella". However, "Lewinella persicus" has come to be in usage and is thus treated as an orthographic variant.
