Nomenclatural History
The species Mycobacterium fortuitum was originally described by da Costa Cruz 1938. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. This name was placed onto the nomina taxorum conservanda by Judicial Opinion 51 in 1974. Nouioui et al. published an emended description of this species in 2018. In 1990, Howey et al. reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form da Costa Cruz 1938 (Approved Lists 1980) . In 2018, Gupta et al. established as the basonym of (da Costa Cruz 1938) Gupta et al. 2018 .
