The species Salinivibrio costicola was originally described and validly published by Mellado et al. 1996. Huang et al. published an emended description of this species in 2000. Mellado et al. formed this name in 1996 by placing the species
Vibrio costicola Smith 1938 (Approved Lists 1980) emend. Garcia et al. 1987
into the genus Salinivibrio Mellado et al. 1996. In 2000, Huang et al. reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form
Salinivibrio costicola costicola (Smith 1938) Huang et al. 2000
