The species Serratia proteamaculans was originally described by Grimont et al. 1978. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Grimont et al. established this name as an earlier heterotypic synonym of
Serratia liquefaciens (Grimes and Hennerty 1931) Bascomb et al. 1971 (Approved Lists 1980)
in 1978. In 1978, Grimont et al. reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form
Serratia proteamaculans proteamaculans (Paine and Stansfield 1919) Grimont et al. 1983
