The species Staphylococcus cohnii was originally described by Schleifer and Kloos 1975. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 1991, Kloos and Wolfshohl reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form (Schleifer and Kloos 1975) Kloos and Wolfshohl 1991 .
