The species Streptococcus lactis was originally described by Löhnis 1909. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 1982, Garvie and Farrow reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form
Streptococcus lactis lactis (Lister 1873) Garvie and Farrow 1982
. In 1985, Schleifer et al. established Streptococcus lactis as the basonym of
Lactococcus lactis (Lister 1873) Schleifer et al. 1986
