The species Streptomyces achromogenes was originally described by Okami and Umezawa 1953. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Nouioui et al. published an emended description of this species in 2018. In 1965, Bhuyan et al. reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form
