The genus Zunongwangia was originally proposed by Qin et al. 2007. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 116 in 2007. Upon validation, this name was corrected from (sic) to . Rameshkumar et al. published an emended description of this genus in 2014. A subsequent emendation was proposed by Fidalgo et al. in 2017.
