The species Sphingobacterium composti was originally described by Ten et al. 2006. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 116 in 2007. García-López et al. published an emended description of this species in 2019.

This name has a later homonym described by Yoo et al. 2007, which is based on a different strain.
