Nomenclatural History

The species Acetobacter xylinum was originally described by Yamada 1983. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 14 in 1984. Euzéby corrected this name from Acetobacter xylinum (sic) to Acetobacter xylinus . In 1983, Yamada reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form
Acetobacter xylinus xylinus corrig. (Brown 1886) Yamada 1984
. Yamada elevated the subspecies
Acetobacter aceti xylinus corrig. (Brown 1886) De Ley and Frateur 1974 (Approved Lists 1980)
to the rank of species to form this name in 1983. In 1997, Yamada et al. established Acetobacter xylinum as the basonym of
Gluconacetobacter xylinus (Brown 1886) Yamada et al. 1998
.
