The species Ferroplasma cupricumulans was originally described by Hawkes et al. 2006. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 119 in 2008. In 2009, Golyshina et al. established as the basonym of (Hawkes et al. 2008) Golyshina et al. 2009 .
