The species Methylomicrobium japanense was originally described and validly published by Kalyuzhnaya et al. 2008. In 2018, Orata et al. established Methylomicrobium japanense as the basonym of
Methylotuvimicrobium japanense (Kalyuzhnaya et al. 2008) Orata et al. 2018
.
Tindall 2019 asserts that one of the three nomenclatural type deposits is a patent strain.
