The species Rickettsia raoultii was originally described and validly published by Mediannikov et al. 2008. Hördt et al. published an emended description of this species in 2020. In 2020, Hördt et al. reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form (Mediannikov et al. 2008) Hördt et al. 2020 .
