The family Ruminococcaceae was originally proposed by Rainey 2009. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 132 in 2010. Tindall replaced this illegitimate name with Peshkoff 1940 (Approved Lists 1980) emend. Tindall 2019 in 2019.

Rainey et al. attempts to unify Oceanospirillaceae with Ruminococcaceae fam. nov.; however, Oceanospirillaceae has priority.
