The species Desulfovibrio longreachii was originally described by Redburn and Patel 1994. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 55 in 1995. Upon validation, this name was corrected from Desulfovibrio longreachii (sic) to Desulfovibrio longreachensis . In 2020, Waite et al. established Desulfovibrio longreachii as the basonym of
Nitratidesulfovibrio longreachensis (Redburn and Patel 1995) Waite et al. 2020
